“Why did we evolve in such a way that certain cognitive functions happen only while we are asleep? … Part of the answer might be that the evolutionary pressures for sleep existed long before higher cognition—functions such as immune system regulation and efficient energy usage (for instance, hunt in the day and rest at night) are only two of the many reasons it makes sense to sleep on a planet that alternates between light and darkness. And because we already had evolutionary pressure to sleep, the theory goes, the brain evolved to use that time wisely by processing information from the previous day: acquire by day; process by night.”
A very strained and persistent attempt by an anchor from Fox News trying his damnedest to steer discussion away from the Russian-Georgia war to John Edwards’ affair in 2006. Really sad. :P
I think the coolest thing about this video is that, though unsuccessful, that other babboon was trying to pry the victim from the crocodile. I think it’s so important to remember that our relatives in the primate kingdom can be known to be quite compassionate and selfless, even if they are supposedly “mindless, self-serving animals.”
“[The value of the myth of epiphany is that] it absolves us of the pressure of the work involved behind any breakthrough innovation.”
Randy Pausch’s “Time Management” lecture. I watched his “Last Lecture” earlier this week and fell head over heels for his motivational and insiprational attitude and voice. I’m sure you can find his Last Lecture anywhere, now that it’s been publicized so much but I’ve just watched this one and found it equally inspiring, but also much more practical and immediate. The title sounds stale but he’s got some amazing tips in there! We can all learn a little something from him. :)
w00t, my new tumblr! :) Currently, I am somewhere between getting ready for school and going back to sleep for an hour. I have no idea why I’ve been getting spontaneous attacks of fatigue .. :{
